The Future Is Bright With Our Solar Powered Feed Mill

Image
We’re taking a significant step toward making our company more sustainable by using renewable energy to make a difference in the way we operate. Our feed mill in Aurora, Missouri, not only plays an integral role in our poultry production at our Monett, Missouri, complex, but it’s now our first commercial feed mill to use solar energy. David Young, senior manager, Live Production in Monett, had the idea to implement renewable energy in the feed mill production four years ago, and discovered solar energy was the best way to grow our business in Aurora. Solar gained us a competitive edge for the feed mill, allowing it to produce more feed while using less purchased energy. Now, he’s proud to see these benefits from going solar, thanks to the support from our Sustainability team. This project also gives us momentum toward accomplishing our 30 by 30 goal—reducing our greenhouse gas emissions by 30 percent by 2030. Re-posted from  The Feed  |  Tyson Foods

Corn harvest remains well ahead of schedule across most of the southern and eastern Midwest, particularly in Illinois and Indiana, while lagging behind the 5-year average across the western Corn Belt, particularly in the Dakotas, Nebraska, Iowa, and Kansas. Soybean harvest is 72% complete nationally, remaining behind the 5-year average of 81% and last year at 81%. Soybean harvest continues to lag well behind the 5-year average across the Plains, western Midwest, and the northern Delta, particularly in Kansas, Arkansas, South Dakota, Nebraska, and Wisconsin. Companies presumed there would be no imports of U.S. soybeans in the fourth quarter of 2018. There was no consideration that they might buy if the price is right – even though U.S. soybeans with a 25% tariff are cheaper than Brazilian or Chinese soybeans at present. Greg Doud, Chief Agricultural Negotiator for the USTR, says the dispute over U.S. soybeans, ethanol, finished meats, and other value-added ag products will take a very long time to resolve – due to the intellectual capital issues that previous U.S. Presidents have ignored, but President Trump is determined to confront head-on. China’s soybean imports are set to drop by a quarter in the last three months of 2018, their biggest fall in at least 12 years as buyer’s curb purchases amid the trade war and high domestic stockpiles. Corn harvest in the U.S. was as expected at 39% and still ahead of the 5-year average of 35%. Soybean harvest progress at 38% complete was near expectations, but behind the 5-year average of 53%. U.S. winter wheat planting is running slightly behind at 65% complete vs 67% on average, but improved weather is expected this week. Soybean production was seen falling from the government’s September estimate due to a decrease in harvested acres in key states such as Illinois and Minnesota. Despite the cuts, the U.S. soybean crop was still projected as the biggest ever, while corn harvest was pegged as the second-biggest on record. The corn crop was seen at 14.778 billion bushels, based on an average record yield of 180.7 bushels per acre, the gover
